A legacy of love and care is nestled in the heart of the Barrhead Healthcare Centre, Ella’s Garden is more than just a courtyard—it’s a living tribute to one of our most cherished Auxiliary members, Ella Anderson. Thanks to her remarkable generosity, what was once a simple outdoor space has become a beautiful, tranquil sanctuary enjoyed daily by patients, families, staff, and visitors.
Ella's Garden - A Donation That Keeps On Giving
Ella Anderson was known not only for her zest for life but for the love and compassion she extended to everyone she met. After spending many adventurous years in the Yukon—where she met her husband Hans (Andy) and raised their son Kenneth—Ella returned to Barrhead in 1975. She worked at the Keir Care Centre and, after retirement, dedicated countless hours volunteering with the Barrhead Healthcare Centre Auxiliary.
Whether pushing the Auxiliary cart with a warm smile or chauffeuring friends around town, Ella’s kindness was ever-present. Her deep commitment to the well-being of others continued even after her passing through a generous bequest in her will—one that made the renovation of the Healthcare Centre’s courtyard possible.

Whether it’s a patient finding a moment of calm before a procedure, a nurse taking a breath of fresh air between shifts, or a family gathering for some quiet time, Ella’s Garden is deeply appreciated and well-used. It represents the spirit of community that the Barrhead Healthcare Centre Auxiliary has fostered for nearly 100 years—and the lasting difference one person can make.
Ella’s Garden is composed of two connected courtyard spaces, joined by a walkway that runs under the walkway in the Healthcare Centre.
Features of the Courtyard Garden
The space is richly planted with a thoughtful mix of evergreens, blooming perennials, and flowering shrubs—hydrangeas, spirea, hostas, astilbe, daylilies, carnations, and salvia—all adding seasonal color and calm. Ironwork features add charm and elegance, creating a setting that encourages reflection and healing.

Thanks to annual plant donations from Northern Flora Garden Centre, Ella’s Garden continues to thrive. These stunning contributions include vibrant Pink Wave petunias and other seasonal blooms, carefully arranged each spring.
The Barrhead Healthcare Centre Auxiliary’s Social Club volunteers work hard to maintain and water the garden, ensuring it remains a welcoming space for all who visit. Their dedication is a testament to the ongoing commitment this community has to wellness and dignity in healthcare environments
