Barrhead Cancer Patient Ride Share Program Gets $10K Boost
We are thrilled to share that the Barrhead cancer patient ride share program, known as the Dr. Bose Road To Home program, was awarded $10,000 from 100 Women Who Care – Westlock at their recent presentation evening.
Representing the program with pride and passion were Linda Knapp, Vi Shriever, and Donna Nelson—dedicated nurses and coordinators from the Barrhead Cancer Centre—alongside Heather Thompson, president of the Barrhead Healthcare Centre Auxiliary. These incredible women stood beside two other deserving charities to share the impact and needs of their organizations.
Because of the Road To Home program, patients don’t have to face the journey alone. This ride share service for cancer patients in Barrhead ensures they receive life-saving care without worrying about transportation barriers.
Linda Knapp spoke on behalf of the Barrhead delegation, sharing heartfelt stories that illustrated the vital role this ride share program plays for cancer patients in the community. Many individuals face overwhelming challenges—not only physically and emotionally, but also financially—as they travel from rural areas to receive treatment at Cancer Centre’s like the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton.
The Road To Home program provides transportation for cancer patients in Barrhead and surrounding communities to receive treatment in Edmonton.
It was founded in memory of Dr. Bireswar Bose, a respected local physician.
About the Dr. Bose Road To Home Program
Founded in memory of Dr. Bireswar Bose, a long-serving physician and surgeon at the Barrhead Healthcare Centre, the program is built on a legacy of compassion. Dr. Bose left a lasting gift in 2020—a generous bequest to support patients undergoing cancer treatment. His vision was clear: no one should miss vital care due to lack of transportation.
Today, the Barrhead cancer patient ride share program serves patients across a wide region, including Barrhead, Slave Lake, Whitecourt, Westlock, Fort Assiniboine, Swan Hills, Mayerthorpe, Sangudo, Rich Valley, Alberta Beach, and Onoway.
In addition, thanks to our volunteers and community support, Dr. Bose’s dream continues to support patients during some of the most difficult moments in their lives.
