Dr. Bose Road To Home Ride Share Program
Volunteer Transportation for Cancer Patients
The Road to Home program provides transportation support to patients undergoing cancer treatment who live in surrounding communities, including Slave Lake, Westlock, Whitecourt, Swan Hills, Fort Assiniboine, Mayerthorpe, Alberta Beach, Onoway, and more.
This volunteer-based initiative was established through a generous bequest from Dr. Bireswar Bose and is made possible through collaboration with the Alberta Cancer Foundation, healthcare staff, and community volunteers.
“We have the capacity to know our patient population well, because we know that every time a patient comes, one of the five of us is going to treat them, not one of the 35 at another center… We have the ability to do that because we are a rural center. We understand where they come from, and we truly believe in patient-centered care — chemotherapy closer to home,”
— Linda Knapp, BCCC Nurse, via The Barrhead Leader
Enhancing Comfort Through Community Support At Barrhead Community Cancer Clinic
From its original 522-square-foot space to the modern, welcoming clinic it is today, the Barrhead Community Cancer Centre has grown in response to the needs of local patients and their families.
Community donations have funded many of the features patients appreciate most, including:
- Six heated massage treatment chairs
- An in-clinic blanket warmer
- A high-tech “Vein Finder” to ease IV access
- Six drop-down TVs
- A refreshment and beverage station
In addition, every new patient receives a Welcome Bag with comfort items like a cozy blanket and reusable water bottle—courtesy of the Barrhead Healthcare Centre Auxiliary. These small acts of care help ease the experience of treatment, bringing relief and reassurance to patients during a difficult time.
