The Physicians Sleep Room was first established in the early 1990s and had seen decades of heavy use. Its condition reflected the years of overnight shifts, tired locum physicians, and weekend duty.

What started as a simple request to replace an outdated TV/VHS unit evolved into a full-scale renovation, thanks to the initiative of Auxiliary member Linda Wolfram. When she saw the room’s condition—broken furniture, worn carpeting, and faded decor—she proposed a complete overhaul.

As medical professionals work demanding hours—often through the night—the importance of sleep and recovery cannot be overstated. Research increasingly supports the connection between rest and cognitive performance. Short, restorative naps are a proven and cost-effective way to combat fatigue, improve performance, and safeguard both physician well-being and patient care.

At the Barrhead Healthcare Centre, on-call doctors aren’t just working overnight—they’re often coming straight off a full eight-hour clinic shift. These dedicated professionals care for our families during the day and remain on call throughout the night, ready to respond to emergencies, trauma, and walk-in patients.

A well-appointed sleep room isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. It offers our physicians a space to rest and recharge, helping ensure they can continue delivering high-quality care around the clock.

The sleep room plays a crucial role in supporting locum physicians who travel from out of town to provide weekend coverage at our Healthcare Centre. These doctors stay on-site throughout the weekend, ensuring continuous patient care and allowing our dedicated local physicians to take much-needed time off for rest and family. Without this essential support, maintaining service continuity and physician wellness would be far more challenging. Providing a clean, comfortable, and welcoming space for our locum doctors is not only a matter of hospitality—it’s a reflection of how deeply we value their contribution to our healthcare system.

The revitalization began with clearing out the old furnishings and replacing the worn carpet with modern, easy-to-clean flooring. The outdated beige walls got a fresh coat of glossy, contemporary paint. (Love the new look? The paint and flooring were supplied by Leon’s Carpet and Paint, located right on Main Street!)

New, sleek blackout blinds from Sunshadow Interlux were installed to provide optimal rest at any time of day or night.

Linda then visited Comfort Corner, where she selected a high-quality mattress set and space-saving furnishings, including a cozy recliner for short breaks and a functional compact table and chair set. A stylish armoire now provides essential storage for housekeeping, and a modern adjustable lamp replaced the decades-old lighting fixture.

And the replacement for the archaic and broken TV/VCR combo?

Barrhead Sound to the rescue! They delivered a sleek, multifunctional Smart TV that is easily visible with a remote control that works!

DURING The Update Process…

After months of planning, support, and hands-on effort, the Barrhead Healthcare Centre Auxiliary is proud to share the completion of the Physician Sleep Room Upgrade — a project designed to offer our on-call doctors a safe, quiet, and comfortable space to rest between shifts and overnight calls.

The newly upgraded sleep room is a much-needed transformation that brings comfort, dignity, and modernity to a once-utilitarian space. Fresh paint, new blinds, and coordinated furnishings have turned the room into a restful, professional environment for our visiting and on-call doctors. This thoughtful renovation not only improves rest conditions but also reflects our deep commitment to physician wellness and respect. It’s a clear investment in both care and hospitality—one that supports recruitment, retention, and the overall well-being of those who care for our community.

As part of this project, we are deeply honoured to recognize a meaningful memorial donation made in loving memory of Dr. Charles Godberson.

Dr. Godberson served the Barrhead community for over 50 years as a dedicated country doctor — caring for patients with wisdom, warmth, and an unmistakable sense of humor. He was not only a healer, but a mentor, community leader, and trusted presence in times of need. His belief in hands-on, heartfelt care shaped healthcare in our region and left a legacy that continues to inspire.

The generous contribution made by the Godberson family has helped create a space where today’s physicians — many of whom walk the same halls Dr. Godberson once did — can rest and recharge. It is a fitting tribute to a man who gave so much of himself in service to others.
